4711 Original Eau de Cologne began production in 1792 in Cologne on 4711 Carillons Street by Wilhelm Muelhens. He received the recipe as a wedding gift from a Carthusian monk, and it was said to be the recipe for "aqua mirabilis," a miraculous water that could be used both internally and externally. He started production, and it became a great success, even being used faithfully by stars of the time such as Goethe and Richard Wagner. The recipe is still a secret, but it is made with essential oils for their aromatherapeutic properties. Initially, it was used both externally and internally. In 1810, Napoleon decided that all secret recipes for internal use should be made public, so Wilhelm Muelhens decided to only sell it for external use.Top notes: bergamot, lemon, orange, and petitgrainHeart notes: rosemary, lavender, and rosesBase notes: musk and neroli
